WAT? #9 - Maibocks

It’s almost spring in Minnesota! The snow has melted (although it’s still coming down) so it’s time to try some Seasonal Maibocks from your local micro brews.

A Maibock is a heavily alcoholic Lager that was traditionally brewed for springtime festivals in Germany.

They are clear, crisp and fruity with sometimes strong hop flavors. Great for drinking with good mates on a warm spring day.

  1. Summit Scandia… Little background. It was a limited release, keg only beer last year. Due to it’s popularity they decided to bottle it for the summer seasonal instead of producing the hefe weizen. Style wise, the Scandia uses wit beer as a base, but then the brewers decided to give it a Scandanavian twist as it were. So it has cardamon, corriander, and biitter orange in it as well as wheat and some flaked oats to round it out. Then like a wit (and hefe weizen) yeast is left in the beer when bottled.

So not a “true” wit beer from a Belgium perspective, but something fun they tried out last year that turned into a minor hit. Hence putting it into the line up this year.

Also… If you go to Chicago you’ll be able to find Summit Hefe Weizen, as they will still be brewing it year round for that market only. Don’t ask me why… Chicago likes wheat beers a lot.
